With infinite resolution and lossless quality over any distance, the 4-20mA current loop has dominated the control industry in its simplicity and reliability. Analog current meters are limited by this simplicity, however, providing the user with little more than a failure-prone generalization of a process’s status. The Computer Age has ushered in a wave of panel instrumentation, and be it for higher precision, better visibility, increased functionality, or continued manufacturer support, it's time to replace your old, 4-20mA analog meters.

The Power of the Loop (Back to Basics)

The current loop is probably the most underestimated data transmission and control method of them all.  It’s so simple that we tend to ignore it in favor of more complex and sophisticated methods.  Theoretically, you could transmit data/signals infinitely if you had an infinite EMF (E) to push the current (I) over a conductor with < infinite resistance (E=IR).  If you want to light up the earth along its equator, you would need about 40,000 volts to light up to about 40,000 LEDs around the Earth’s equator at 1Km apart; as long as your total wire resistance is below 200K Ohms!
